As Mothers, our days generally revolve around our children – caring for them, cleaning up after them, potty training them, disciplining them, cooking for them, playing with them (and the list goes on) – so much so that taking care of ourselves tends to get put on the back burner. Last year, that was me. I was putting me and my happiness last. My kids, my husband, my house and my business all came first. And at the end of the year, I was worn out, un-healthy, stressed, and miserable. So, at the beginning of this year, I made it my goal to take better care of myself. To be kinder to myself (and others), to laugh more, and to choose happiness every day.
With Mother’s Day coming up in a couple days, I wanted to share a few little mom luxuries that I’ve indulged in (or am planning on indulging in) that have helped me take care of myself mentally and physically – which in turn has made me a better Mom to my boys. Because sometimes something that feels indulgent – even if it’s something simple – can make a huge difference in your day.
I don’t actually own these yet, but I plan to! Podcasts have become one of my favorite luxuries this year. I put one on while I’m editing or making dinner and it makes the mundane way more fun. I actually heard about these headphones while listening to one of my favorite podcasts – Young House Love. I’ve been on the lookout for a pretty pair of bluetooth headphones (mainly so I can stop borrowing my husband’s boring black ones) and when Sherry mentioned these and also gave them a rave review, I knew I had to have them. They are going to be perfect podcast listening (my new favorite is Coffee and Crumbs) when I don’t feel like hearing “Go Go Go Go Go” in the background (moms of Paw Patrol loving kiddos will totally understand what I’m saying 😂 ). I love the color and I also love that they aren’t super expensive.
A gratitude journal was something I started towards the end of last year and it has been the perfect thing for me to relax with at the end of a long day. I keep it right by the couch with a pen, so when I collapse after the boys are in bed, it’s close at hand. No matter how hard the day was, choosing and writing down three things that I’m grateful for that day always makes me smile.
A couple of months ago, I started a new daily habit that has become a favorite of mine. After my 2 year old wakes up from his nap, I put a show on the TV for the kids and I make myself some hot lemon water to sip on while I get in 30 minutes of reading. My husband works until after bedtime – so the dinner, bath, and bedtime routine is just me on most days – and my lemon water/reading routine helps me re-energize for the busy evening hours. And while I admit that I still have a boring, basic kettle – this one is on my wishlist… because being able to boil my water in this super cute kettle would make my routine even happier :).
Bark Thins are my end-of-the-day indulgence… whether it was a good day or a bad one (because any excuse to eat chocolate, right?). I’m a huge lover of dark chocolate and I love the different combinations Bark Thins offers. My current favorite is going between the Almond Sea Salt and the Pumpkinseed with Sea Salt. Add in a glass of wine on a bad day and you have yourself the perfect reward for a job well done.
One of the things I do to take care of myself is making sure to drink plenty of water. What makes it more indulgent than a cute water bottle?! I keep my Life Factory bottle close to me all day long. The 22 0z size is perfect for making sure I don’t have to be constantly refilling it all day and the classic lid (my favorite lid style) is amazing – not only because it’s completely leak proof and I can throw it right into my tote (last thing I need is one more thing to carry), but also because then my water doesn’t have to pass through silicone or plastic on the way to my mouth! I currently own the classic in Navy, but am going to be adding in this 22 oz Pearl Dot bottle to my collection, which I have a feeling is going to be my new favorite.
I don’t have cable, so I may be late to the Chip and Joanna party, but I am currently OBSESSED with everything Joanna Gaines puts her hands on. The show, the magazine, her social media accounts (especially her Pinterest!). Anyways, I got this book for Christmas and sitting down to read a chapter (I’m slowly reading, because I don’t want it to end!) while sipping my lemon water is one of my favorite mom luxuries.
You guys… this is my new favorite find. One of my Fresh 48 clients recommended it (Thanks, Kristan!) and I LOVE it. The concept itself is awesome. You go to their website, answer a few questions about your hair, then choose 5 hair goals – I think I picked volume, anti-frizz, oil control, length, and strength – and then you can choose your color and even your scent! I chose the dye-free option with the Sandalwood Violet scent. I love that it’s paraben, sulfate, and toxin-free, and I also love that they put your name on the bottle. Oh – and the packaging is super cute (I’m a sucker for cute packaging). I’ve been using it for a few weeks now and can really notice a difference in my hair. It feels healthier and is definitely less frizzy and oily. The best part is that the pretty bottles and the lovely smell make me feel like I’m taking a shower at the spa. I’m officially a convert.
This is going to be my Mother’s Day gift to myself. Talk about luxury, right?! Since I had my first son 5 1/2 years ago, I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect mom bag. Of course, I want it to function like a diaper bag, but I don’t want it to LOOK like a diaper bag. It also needs to be big enough to hold my camera, needs to have a cross-body strap, and needs to have outside pockets for quick access to keys, phone, etc… After going through quite a few not-real-leather bags (both camera and diaper), I’ve realized that I’m ready to invest in real leather. The fake ones can be cute and even quite functional at times, but they don’t last. I’ve read the reviews and seen lots of photos and watched lots of You Tube videos and ladies, I’m pretty sure I’ve found my answer. This bag is real leather, stylish, has outside pockets, a messenger strap AND it also converts to a backpack!!! All I have to do now is finalize what style I’m getting and order it. If you’re on the hunt for the perfect Mom-bag, definitely check out Lily-Jade. They may be your answer, too!
I know pedicures are a popular Mother’s Day gift, so how about some super cute sandals to show off those tootsies? Slip on sandals are a must for me in the summer when I’m running out the door, and for me, these are the perfect combination of functional, affordable, and cute.
Yoga has been THE most important investment I made in myself this year. I can’t believe I’m only discovering it now! Going to the yoga studio feels like the ultimate luxury for me. I mean, it’s a whole hour where I get peace and quiet and get to focus on nothing but me and my breath and moving my body. I’m always a better Mom on the days I get to yoga. I invested in this Manduka mat a couple months ago and I love it. It’s heavy enough to feel like a high-quality mat (which makes me feel like a real yogi 😜), while being lite enough for me to be able to carry it on my back when I bike or walk to the studio. If you’re in the market for a new mat, I highly recommend it!
Well, there you have it. The top ten luxuries I’m loving for Mother’s Day (and all year long!). I hope you enjoyed them and maybe even found something new that you want to indulge in – you deserve it! I would love to hear what your favorite mom luxury is in the comments – I’m always on the lookout for new indulgences :).
Happy Mother’s Day from one mom to another!!!
