This is going to be a long one! I had the best experience of my photography career so far… I was able to be at the hospital to photograph the arrival of Catherine and Amir’s sweet baby boy! I know, amazing, right? Photographing a birth is something that I have wanted to do for a long time. When Catherine initially contacted me about maternity and newborn photos (you can see their maternity session here), she also asked about the possibility of birth photography. I jumped at the chance to try and make it work. While I can’t currently make the commitment to photograph births, it is something I would love to offer in the future. Catherine and Amir were my perfect first birth clients. We had an agreement that while I would make every effort to attend the birth of their baby, that there was no guarantee I could make it, and they were very understanding of that. Well, when I got the news that Catherine was headed to the hospital, it couldn’t have come at a more perfect time because my husband was off work that day and was able to stay home with the kids. So, I was off to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, OH to capture their baby’s arrival. While I had big plans to photograph his arrival, Baby had his own plans and was breech, so a c-section was necessary and I wasn’t allowed in. I was able to grab some detail photos and some photos of Catherine in labor and heading to the OR.
Since, I couldn’t go to the OR, Amir was in charge of getting baby’s first moments on camera (and he did a great job!) and I was able to capture their family awaiting to hear the news of baby’s arrival. Catherine and Amir had kept baby’s sex a surprise, so everyone was so anxious to find out if it was a boy or a girl. It felt like forever, but finally one of the nurses brought out the camera with photos of the baby to show the family. I loved that I was there and was able to capture the excitement of Catherine and Amir’s family finding out that the baby was a boy and then seeing him for the first time on the back of that camera. Grandma, Grandpa, and Auntie were all smiling ear to ear the whole time! I love that Catherine and Amir will be able to see images from this moment and the smiles on their family’s faces since it was something that they would have missed if I wasn’t there. And a big thanks goes out to Catherine and Amir’s family for being so great to me and so accepting of the stranger sitting with them while they awaited the big news:)
After a while, I was allowed back in the recovery room to meet baby Kamran. I was able to get images of Catherine and Amir with their precious baby boy in his first hours of life (and how does Mom look so great after just giving birth?). Doesn’t he look just like his Daddy? I loved how as soon as he was unswaddled, his little legs popped up just like they were positioned in the belly. And he couldn’t keep his little hands away from his mouth. He just wanted to eat his adorable little fingers.
What an amazing experience this was. I can’t put into words how grateful I am to Catherine and Amir for allowing me to be there for the arrival of their precious baby boy. I hope in the future to be able to offer birth sessions as part of your newborn photography experience.
Stay tuned for Kamran’s Fresh 48 Session that took place at the hospital when he was just 2 days old and prepare for major cuteness overload!!!
