If you are not a photographer, you are probably wondering – “What the heck is golden-hour?”. And if you are one of my maternity or family clients, you have probably wondered… “Why does she always want us to meet up for photos right during dinner/bedtime?”. Well, the session I have to share with you today is going to hopefully answer that question for you….
First of all, know that there are many elements that go into making a great photo – things like who or what the subject(s) of the photo is, the connection between the subjects, a beautifully composed photo, great color, etc, etc… But, to me, the MOST important thing that will transform a photo from just a pretty picture into a stop-you-in-your-tracks magical photo is… the LIGHT. And when we are planning on outdoor photos, golden-hour can help make that happen. Golden-hour is that magical time of the day as the sun is going down (or coming up, but I am soooo not a morning person 🙂 ). The sun casts a golden glow over everything, the busy-ness of the day starts to quiet down, and the world around you just looks prettier. In my (and many other photographers) opinion, it is the BEST time of the day for outdoor photos. So, what will shooting at this time of day do for you? Well, the light is soft and super flattering at this time of day – it makes your hair and skin look amazing! There are no harsh shadows to deal with under your eyes or chin (dark circles, anyone?). With the softness of the light, you won’t have any squinty eye photos… And you will have a beautiful golden glow of light in all your images. Trust me, rescheduling dinner/bedtime will be worth it when you see the amazing results this time of day can produce.
Natalie and Will really wanted outdoor photos for their maternity session. I am not from the Akron/Canton area and with Natalie and Will being recent transplants themselves, I relied on some photographer friends to help me nail down a location for this session. And man, did they deliver. Firestone Metro Park is the perfect for golden-hour pregnancy photos. There are trees to filter the light while it’s still a little bright, there’s a great path, there’s a lake, there’s flowers, and most importantly… great light. The three of us had so much fun wandering through the park finding great little spots for photos along the way. You know the saying “The couple that laughs together, stays together”… Well, if that’s true, then without a doubt, Natalie and Will are going to be together forever. Watching them together was incredible. And if I was Will, I would want to make Natalie laugh all the time, too. Her smile is SO infectious and hers is the kind of genuine smile that lights up an entire room. I know the two of them are going to be great parents and will make sure their girl knows how to laugh :).
Natalie and Will, thank you SO much for choosing me as your photographer!!! I can’t wait to hang out again and meet Finnley in a few weeks!
