With each inquiry I get for a photography session, comes some commonly asked questions. I decided to write a series of blog posts that will be dedicated to answering some of the more frequent questions. My hope is that this will be a great resource for potential clients as well as for current clients who are trying to plan their session(s). Each session type will get its own post so I can be specific in my answers 🙂 . Look for the posts on maternity, fresh 48 newborn, and family sessions coming soon!
First up, In Home Newborn Photography FAQ!
1. When should I book my Ashley Sasak Photography newborn session?
I suggest booking as soon as you know you want a newborn session with me. Due dates typically book out 3-6 months in advance. Is your due date coming up fast? Feel free to still shoot me an email, I sometimes have months that are not fully booked. Already had a look around and ready to book your session? Contact me to get your baby on the calendar!
2. When will my newborn photography session take place?
With my natural approach to newborn photography, your baby’s age can be anywhere from 5 days to 3 weeks old! This age flexibility is one of my favorite things about my photography style. It allows you the choice of capturing your baby in his/her first days at home when all the newborn details are fresh and new OR you have the choice to wait until you are more settled in as a family and feeling a little more like yourselves before getting in front of the camera 🙂 . Whichever you feels works best for your family!
3. How do I schedule a session when I don’t know when my baby will be born?
All newborn sessions are booked according to their due date. I only accept a limited number of sessions each month to ensure ease of scheduling with each family. Just call, email, or text after your baby is born and we will discuss together what day and time would be best for your family.
4. Are family members included in the session as well? Or is that extra?
Of course family is included! I believe that each newborn session should tell a story of your growing family in addition to having photos of just your baby. All immediate family is included in the session including siblings and pets at no extra cost!
5. How long does the session last?
Your Ashley Sasak Photography newborn session does not have a time limit. While sessions typically last somewhere between 1-3 hours, I find in the first weeks of life, a baby has no real schedule. Therefore, we allow time for feedings, diaper changes, and overall crabbiness. I do ask that if you do not want photos of the baby feeding (whether formula or breast), that you feed just prior to my arrival to hopefully get baby as happy and tired as we can with a full belly. If you would like to capture feeding time, we will just allow time for that during the shoot!
6. What kind of images can I expect in my gallery?
Galleries will include images of just your baby along with images of your entire family. The photos of baby alone are usually done swaddled or naked. I like to do them on a special blanket, a cute patterned rug in the nursery, or even just on a bed or couch. Images of your family will include photos of just Mom with baby, just Dad with baby, and just siblings and/or pets with baby (if cooperative!). I also love to include detail shots of baby lips, hands, feet, and belly buttons. Some of my favorite photos to include are detail photos that help to tell your family’s story. Photos of your home, your newborn clutter, and the nursery details you worked so hard on. My goal is to get images that will tell the story of this time in your lives. If you are still curious, head to the blog to see some examples of what a typical in home newborn session will look like.
7. Do you offer images in color or black and white?
Each gallery will have a mix of both color and black and white. Usually, there are more color images (because that’s what makes my heart sing), but if you prefer black and white, let me know and I can include more of them in your gallery.
8. Ok, I’m ready to book my session! Now, what do I wear?
I suggest a neutral color palette for newborn sessions as to not take away the focus from your precious baby. You should avoid loud patterns, bright or flourescent colors, and logos. New moms should wear something loose that does not make you feel uncomfortable. Long dresses or flowy tops usually work great! Remember, you will not have that pre-pregnancy body yet (unless you are one of those moms that I love to hate 🙂 ). You can also check out my What to wear: Newborn Pinterest board for some inspiration!
9. What should I dress my baby in?
Babies photograph best and most naturally in a neutral onesie or when they are naked and swaddled. Socks should be removed (to avoid lines). If there is a special outfit or blanket you would like to incorporate please let me know and we can work it in to your session.
10. Do you bring props?
No, I do not. I don’t photograph with any props that are not sentimental to your family. If there is something you would like included in your session, please let me know ahead of time and we can talk about how to incorporate it into your session.
11. What can I do to help my session go smoothly?
Thank you for asking! You can feed the baby just prior to my arrival (if you do not want feeding photos) and keep your house a tad warmer than usual, babies hate the cold! I use all natural light, so any blinds you can open and overhead lights you can shut off will help me to find a good place to shoot.
12. I have a newborn so my house is a mess. Will that look bad in my photos?
No! I believe in incorporating real life into your photos. A general straightening up is all that’s needed. There may be times I move an item for aesthetic purposes, but there will also be times when you will see me photographing your newborn clutter! Someday you will want to remember that mound of cards with well wishes from family and friends, the endless tubes of diaper cream, and all the stacks of diapers.
13. Do I receive digital images and how do I receive my photos?
Yes, all collections include all final digital images. Within 1-2 days of your session, I will post a sneak peek photo or two on my Facebook page. Then approximately 2 weeks from your session date, you will get receive an email with a link to your password protected online gallery. All of your images can be downloaded right to your computer from your gallery and you can save them in whatever way you prefer (usb, dvd, external hard drive, etc.). Prints and products can also be ordered directly from your gallery. I will also share a blog post on my website featuring the best images from your session so you can share your session with family and friends!
14. I think I also want a maternity session and a fresh 48 session, do you offer packages?
Why yes, I do! I find most of my clients book more than one session. You can see the different collection options here.
15. Can I order professional prints, an album, or birth announcements through you?
Yes! All collections will already include a complimentary set of 25 custom designed birth announcements. Additional announcements can be ordered in sets of 25. Each collection also includes a print credit that can be applied toward the purchase of prints, products, and/or albums.
16. What types of payments do you accept and when is payment due?
I accept cash, check, or credit card. The session deposit is due at the time of booking to hold your date and the remaining payment is due 7 days before your due date.
That wraps up the in home newborn portion of the faq blog series! Thank you so much for considering me as your photographer and I hope that this has helped to answer some of your questions!
