I remember when I found out I was pregnant with my second baby. There was excitement, yes, but there was also so much worry.
I worried about how I was going to handle the transition from one to two children. I worried about how my son would handle becoming a big brother. I worried about how our family’s finances would adjust to adding another baby. I worried about where we were going to put this baby in our tiny, 2 bedroom home.
And then I found out that my son was going to be born with severe bilateral club feet. All of a sudden, all my other worries disappeared. I was now only worried about his health. What caused his club feet? Was there something else going on with him that was causing this? The doctors didn’t know. How would this affect delivery? How would it affect his life going forward? Would he walk? Would he be able to run and play? We didn’t know.
After a couple surgeries, a series of casts, and his special shoes… today, he is two and he is a healthy, happy toddler who runs so fast he can almost keep up with his big brother. But, I will never, ever forget that feeling in the ultrasound room when there was so much unknown.
Now, multiply that feeling by a hundred and I can only begin to understand what the Detwiler Family has been through.
I met the Detwilers when Cara contacted me about doing photos for their son Liam’s first birthday. I loved working with them and had a blast at their session, so I was absolutely thrilled when she contacted me about maternity and newborn photos for baby #2. They had no idea that they would soon find out news that would rock their whole world.
You see, before we even scheduled their maternity pictures, they found out that their daughter Emma had a rare congenital heart defect. And with that, their session suddenly became about so much more than ‘just’ capturing their second pregnancy.
These apple orchard maternity pictures were taken at Miller’s Apple Hill in back in September of 2016 when the Detwilers were deep in so much unknown, so much worry. My hope is that when they look back on these photos, they won’t dwell on the worry, they will just see the love they had for their unborn daughter and the strength they had as a family.
Fast forward 11 months and Emma is now a beautiful 9 month old girl who is (hopefully!) getting ready to leave the hospital for the first time. Stay tuned, because I will be sharing more of this amazing little girl’s story very soon.
