When it comes to planning your maternity pictures, I will tell you that my #1 favorite location is your own home. I often get asked why that is… so, today, I thought I’d share my top 5 reasons why I love in home maternity photography sessions with you all.
1. It’s super easy to include your fur-babies.
I know for many families, your pet is considered your first baby – a full-fledged member of your family. So, why wouldn’t you want ALL your family members included in your maternity pictures??? Having your session at your home is the perfect (and easiest!) way to include your fur-baby in your photos. For cats, it may be the only way to include them in your photos and for dogs – well, they are most comfortable in their own environment. I find as long as I take a minute to introduce myself, pet them, and let them know they can trust me, they have no problems striking a pose or two for my camera.
2. We don’t have to worry about the weather.
Oh, Cleveland… I do love you so. I love your restaurants, your breweries, your bike-friendliness, your lakefront, your sunsets… the list could go on and on. But, you know there is one thing I don’t love about you… Your unpredictable weather. It certainly does not make scheduling outdoor sessions easy. Sometimes, the forecast will say sunny and beautiful and then it ends up raining by the evening. Sometimes it will say 80% chance of rain and storms and then we get a miraculous burst of sunshine by session time. It truly is anyone’s guess. And when there’s things like taking time off work and hair/makeup appointment cancellations involved – a last minute decision based on the weather is not always possible. When we plan on a home session, we don’t have to worry about the weather. There are no last minute cancellations due to rain… And you also don’t have to worry about things such as if the ground is going to be too muddy. Or if the wind is just going to be too strong. Or if it’s supposed to be 40 degrees when you have your outfit planned for a 70 degree day. An in home maternity photography session eliminates all that worry and anything that eliminates worry makes me happy :).
3. You can look back on what your home was like BC (before children 😂).
You know that pretty vase you have displayed on your coffee table? Well, by the time your kid is crawling, it won’t be able to sit there undisturbed anymore. And that frame with the photo from your wedding day on your end table? If you don’t want it to end up broken, it better find a new home, too… My home looks nothing like it did before I had kids. I mean, you actually used to be able to see the floors! Now, they’re just covered in crumbs, toys, and legos. My sons’ room used to be decorated so perfectly – everything in the spot I wanted it to be, down to which books were displayed and which stuffed animal was on the shelf. Now? I have no say… the books are wherever the kids left them after story time, the animal on the shelf is whichever one they like the least at the moment, and the cute decor has been replaced by Paw Patrol toys. And now that I’m embracing the mess, I wish I had more pictures of what my home looked like before all the chaos.
4. You will have photos of your home to show your children.
Oftentimes, the home that you bring your first child home to is not your forever home. That’s certainly the case for me and I know it’s the case for many of my clients as well. I want my kids to be able to see photos of their first home, since they most likely won’t remember it. Because this is the home where Mommy and Daddy fell in love…. I will tell them stories about how we got engaged in this living room. How I finally moved all my stuff in when we got back from the honeymoon. And how I told their Daddy we were pregnant for the first (and second!) time right in that same spot where we got engaged. We brought our first son home here. We watched him take his first steps across that kitchen floor. We watched him change from being an only child to flourishing as a big brother. I don’t want them to forget their first home – Our first home.
5. It makes your session personal and unique and you are free to be yourselves.
No two houses are the same. Your home is unique to you. Which means your photos will be unique to you. Your in home maternity photography session will be personalized to who you are as a couple – showcasing your style and your love. Also, at home sessions, it’s just you, your spouse, your children, your pets, and me. We can laugh and chat and you won’t have to feel weird about other park-goers gawking at you when I ask you to come in close and stare into each other’s eyes. It’s a personal, unique, and fun way to have your maternity pictures taken.
So, there they are! And if you are thinking about booking a maternity session in the near future – I hope you will consider having your home be the back drop for at least part of your session. My guess is you won’t regret it! And if you have had photos taken in your home before, please tell me in the comments – what was your favorite part of having an in home photography session – I’d love to know!
